A. "Long before European ships dared to sail out of sight of land, the peoples of the Pacific were crossing thousands of kilometres of open ocean in small outrigger canoes. They settled islands scattered across an area larger than any land empire in history, from Hawaii in the north to New Zealand in the south. Remarkably, they achieved this without compasses, charts, or any of the instruments that European sailors would later consider indispensable.
B. "For a long time, Western scholars refused to accept that these voyages were deliberate. They argued that the islands must have been reached by chance, as fishing canoes were blown off course by storms and drifted to unknown shores. This 'accidental drift' theory treated the settlement of the Pacific as a matter of luck rather than skill — and, by implication, doubted the abilities of the islanders themselves.
C. "The theory was gradually dismantled by patient fieldwork. In the 1960s the anthropologist Thomas Gladwin lived among the navigators of the Caroline Islands and recorded a vast body of knowledge that had been passed down by word of mouth for generations. A decade later, the sailor David Lewis retraced traditional routes across the Pacific using only indigenous methods, demonstrating that such voyages could be planned in advance and repeated at will. The doubt that had long surrounded Polynesian navigation began to dissolve.
D. "At the heart of the system lay the stars. A skilled navigator memorised the points on the horizon where particular stars rise and set, assembling a mental 'star compass' of more than thirty reference points. As one star climbed too high in the sky to be useful, another rising in almost the same position took its place, providing an unbroken line of direction throughout the night.
E. "The stars, of course, are frequently hidden by cloud. When they were, navigators read the ocean itself. Long swells generated by distant, steady winds hold their direction even under an overcast sky, and an experienced sailor could feel the pattern of these swells through the hull of the canoe — sometimes, it is said, by lying down and sensing them with the whole body.
F. "Closer to land, further signs appeared. Certain seabirds fly out to fish at dawn and return to land at dusk, so their flight direction in the evening points the way to an island. The underside of clouds may glow faintly green above a shallow lagoon, and floating vegetation suggests that land lies somewhere upwind. A navigator gathered dozens of such clues and weighed them together.
G. "Today the knowledge that scholars once dismissed is celebrated and deliberately revived. In 1976 a reconstructed voyaging canoe, the Hōkūle'a, sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti using only traditional techniques, guided by a navigator from the Caroline Islands. Its success sparked a cultural revival across the Pacific, and a new generation is once again learning to find the way by star, swell and bird."
