The mill ground flour for the village until the river was diverted in 1931. The wheel was taken out a few years later and the building stood empty for half a century. Today the ground floor a small museum of local trades.

Volunteers have kept rain gauges in their gardens across the county since the 1880s, and the network they maintain is denser than any official one. Meteorologists ignored these records for decades. They them routinely now, and two national series have been corrected against them.

Ulugh Beg's astronomers compiled their catalogue in the 1430s from measurements taken with a single enormous arc set into the ground. The observatory within a few decades of his death, and the catalogue survived only because copies had already travelled west.

The library bought an iron hand press in 1893 and printed its own catalogue cards on it until the last of the card drawers was retired. The machine in the basement ever since, and the staff have twice brought it upstairs for an open day.
