English, Class - 8: Past Simple

Regular Verbs: The "-ED" Rule, Irregular Verbs: The Rule Breakers

The Past Simple Tense (Oddiy O'tgan Zamon) 🕰️

To master English, you must master time travel. The Past Simple Tense is your time machine. We use it to talk about actions that started and completely finished in the past. It doesn't matter if it happened ten seconds ago or ten thousand years ago—if it is finished, we use Past Simple!

(Ingliz tilini mukammal bilish uchun siz vaqt bo'ylab sayohat qilishni o'rganishingiz kerak. Oddiy O'tgan Zamon sizning vaqt mashinangizdir. Biz undan o'tmishda boshlanib, butunlay tugagan harakatlar haqida gapirish uchun foydalanamiz. Bu o'n soniya oldin yoki o'n ming yil oldin sodir bo'lganligi muhim emas — agar u tugagan bo'lsa, biz Oddiy O'tgan Zamondan foydalanamiz!)

1. The Magic Signal Words (Sehrli Signal So'zlar) 🕵️‍♂️

When you see these incredibly helpful words, you immediately know you are in the past: (Ushbu ajoyib yordamchi so'zlarni ko'rganingizda, o'tmishda ekanligingizni darhol bilib olasiz:)

  • Yesterday (Kecha)
  • Last... (O'tgan...): last night (o'tgan tunda), last week (o'tgan haftada), last incredibly long year (o'tgan nihoyatda uzun yilda).
  • ...ago (...oldin): completely finished exactly two days ago (roppa-rosa ikki kun oldin butunlay tugagan).
  • In + a past year: In 2010.

2. Regular Verbs: The "-ED" Rule (To'g'ri fe'llar: "-ED" Qoidasi) 🧱

For most verbs in English, pushing them into the past is wonderfully simple. You just attach -ed to the end of the word. And the best part? It is the same for every single subject (I, You, He, She, We, They). No more "Super S" rule to worry about! (Ingliz tilidagi aksariyat fe'llarni o'tgan zamonga o'tkazish ajoyib darajada oson. So'zning oxiriga shunchaki -ed qo'shasiz. Eng zo'r joyi shundaki, bu har bir ega (I, You, He, She, We, They) uchun bir xil! Endi "Super S" qoidasi haqida qayg'urishga hojat yo'q!)

  • I worked incredibly hard yesterday. (Men kecha nihoyatda qattiq ishlardim.)
  • She played the beautiful piano. (U chiroyli pianino chaldi.)

Spelling Rules for Regular Verbs (To'g'ri fe'llarning yozilish qoidalari):

  1. Silent "E" (Ovozsiz "E"): If the word already peacefully ends in "e", just lovingly add "d".
    • live ➡️ lived (yashadi)
    • love ➡️ loved (sevdi)
  2. Consonant + Y (Undosh + Y): Drop the "y" completely and confidently add -ied.
    • study ➡️ studied (o'qidi)
    • try ➡️ tried (harakat qildi)
  3. Double the Consonant (Undoshni ikkilantirish): For short, suddenly ending verbs (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant), double the final letter.
    • stop ➡️ stopped (to'xtadi)
    • plan ➡️ planned (rejalashtirdi)

🗣️ Pronunciation Secret (Talaffuz siri): Do not always say "id"!

  • If the verb ends in a 't' or 'd' sound (want, need), say "id" (want-ed, need-ed).
  • For most other words, the "-ed" sounds like a quick, sharp "t" (washed = wash-t) or a soft "d" (played = play-d).

3. Irregular Verbs: The Rule Breakers (Noto'g'ri fe'llar: Qoidabuzarlar) 🚨

These remarkably stubborn words completely refuse to follow the "-ed" rule. You cannot guess them; you simply must memorize them by heart! (Bu hayratlanarli darajada qaysar so'zlar "-ed" qoidasiga bo'ysunishni butunlay rad etadi. Ularni taxmin qila olmaysiz; shunchaki yodlab olishingiz shart!)

Here are the most fiercely common ones you must know right now:

  • go ➡️ went (bordi)
  • see ➡️ saw (ko'rdi)
  • eat ➡️ ate (yedi)
  • have ➡️ had (ega bo'ldi)
  • buy ➡️ bought (sotib oldi)
  • make ➡️ made (yasadi/qildi)
  • take ➡️ took (oldi)
  • do ➡️ did (bajardi)
  • think ➡️ thought (o'yladi)

4. Negative Sentences: The Time Stealer (Inkor gaplar: Vaqt o'g'risi) ❌

To safely say "not" in the past, we use the powerful helper verb didn't (did not). But here is the massive secret: "didn't" completely steals the past tense! Once you use "didn't", the main verb MUST go safely back to its normal, present form. (O'tgan zamonda "not" ni bexato aytish uchun biz kuchli didn't (did not) yordamchi fe'lidan foydalanamiz. Lekin bu yerda katta sir bor: "didn't" o'tgan zamonni butunlay o'g'irlab oladi! "Didn't" ni ishlatganingizdan so'ng, asosiy fe'l o'zining oddiy, hozirgi holatiga xavfsiz qaytishi SHART.)

  • Correct: I didn't go to the amazingly big park. (Men ajoyib darajada katta parkka bormadim.)
  • Wrong: I didn't went... (You cannot have two past forms together!)
  • Correct: She didn't play the extremely difficult game. (U o'ta qiyin o'yinni o'ynamadi.)
  • Wrong: She didn't played...

5. Questions: The "Did" Trick (So'roq gaplar: "Did" usuli) ❓

To politely ask a question, fiercely throw Did to the absolute front of the sentence. Again, because "Did" holds the past tense, your main verb stays normal! (Xushmuomalalik bilan savol berish uchun Did so'zini gapning eng boshiga jasorat bilan o'tkazing. Yana, "Did" o'tgan zamonni o'zida ushlab turgani uchun, asosiy fe'lingiz oddiy holatda qoladi!)

  • Did you see that incredibly bright star? (Anavi aqlbovar qilmas darajada yorqin yulduzni ko'rdingizmi?)
  • Wrong: Did you saw...
  • Did the ambitious student finish the perfectly designed test? (Tirishqoq o'quvchi mukammal tuzilgan testni tugatdimi?)

🚨 Extreme Cases & Deadly Traps (Xavfli qopqonlar) 🚨

⚠️ Trap 1: The "Was/Were" Virus (O'tgan zamon virusi)

Remember the verb "To Be" (was/were)? Never wildly mix it with an action verb in the Past Simple! (Yodingizdami "To Be" (was/were) fe'li? Oddiy O'tgan Zamonda uni hech qachon harakat fe'li bilan tartibsiz aralashtirmang!)

  • Wrong: I was went to the shop.
  • Correct: I went to the beautifully decorated shop. (Men chiroyli bezatilgan do'konga bordim.)
  • Wrong: Were you worked yesterday?
  • Correct: Did you work yesterday?

⚠️ Trap 2: The "Read" Illusion ("Read" illyuziyasi)

The profoundly interesting verb read (o'qimoq) is totally irregular. In the past, it is spelled exactly the same (read), but it is pronounced completely differently—like the beautifully bright color "red"! (Chuqur ma'noli read (o'qimoq) fe'li mutlaqo qoidabuzardir. O'tgan zamonda u aynan bir xil yoziladi (read), lekin u butunlay boshqacha talaffuz qilinadi — go'zal yorqin "qizil" (red) rangi kabi!)

  • Present: I always mysteriously read (riid) carefully.
  • Past: Yesterday, I quickly read (red) the intensely thick book.
